IBM's P-TECH 9-14 School Model provides young people, primarily from under served backgrounds, the skills and credentials required for 21st century careers. Each year, Novelis recruits talented engineering graduates from around the world to participate in its Engineering Development Program (EDP), a two-year experience that provides participants with a clear career path for future growth and development at the company. Beth: I think its really important to start off when working with anyone, students, or friends or young children, and why things are important and finding out whats interesting to them because science is everywhere. So really neat, really neat reaction, and understanding why, you can make a career out of that. Getting back into the swing of school life can be challenging after a long summer of beach days, pool days, late nights with friends, or even just your summer job. We track internship program success based on metrics that include program growth, diversity of applicants, if interns remain in the STEM fields, and if high school interns continue into our college program and become full-time employees..

Seeking to continually improve the communities in which it operates, SC Johnson partnered with Gateway Technical College to develop the Gateway to Careers Bootcamp program, designed to help address the Racine communitys skilled worker shortage by engaging the areas underemployed and critically unemployed through a customized training program supported by wrap-around case management services. Partnerships are established based on the schools proximity to Abbott locations, if the schools have a strong STEM focus, if the schools have a diverse student body and if school leaders have the time and interest to work closely with Abbott.

In the weeks after our campaign, we heard from the U.S. State Department, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, NASA, the Society of Women Engineers, among others., The blueprint has received a good deal of coverage and attention from media outlets and on YouTube and social media. It takes practice and work and then at the end you have a beautiful piece of music. What do you recommend? And then also partnering with others. And thats fine. The success of our internship program and the blueprints release has exceeded our expectations, Schroetter adds.
This summer will be my third internship with Abbott where I will be able to work in electrophysiology at the Tech Center, which is located in Minnesota. And then I got to anatomy. No stranger to the STEM internship game, Abbott first started an internship program for high school students in 2012 with an each one, reach one mentality, striving to do its part in harnessing the next generation of STEM leaders. Beth: Sure. And the same thing with science and math and technology, engineering, medicine. I feel like Ive had some of the best math and science teachers and thats always kind of helped me in my path. And it was super nice to talk to you. Interns have the opportunity to work in functions that include engineering, science, finance, information technology, and marketing on flexible 10-12 week assignments during the summer.
With a desire to start a movement, Abbott published the detailed blueprint of their high school internship model for any company from any industry to replicate it. Beth, whom Jomi calls a "STEM triple threat," speaks abouthow she found her way amid the science, technology, engineering, and math fields, and offers advice to young women looking to do the same. So, I went back to medical school and discovered my passion for neuroscience. Abbotts internship program was created after it observed that students from underrepresented groups needed exposure to the STEM fields. Our program founder, Corlis Murray, wanted to help students understand that their world is bigger than what they have explored, says Lynn Schroetter, manager, high school intern program.
I think its important that we really notice how were thinking. And now after my second year, Im like maybe industrial engineering. So, you can take normal everyday examples and really get kids excited in science. You can read more about its top-ranked internship programs and find out how to applyhere. Ill give one example. So, at some point in your career, some point in your training, you will find something naturally more difficult. We provide interns with targeted training, a global intern community and the opportunity to create their own networks that they can leverage for decades. So, what struggles did you see with your biochemistry students having and how did you help them?
Jomi: So, changing topics a bit. Students earn their high school diploma and a no-cost associate degree, along with workplace skills acquired through mentoring, internships, and more. Graduating senior Anushka Agashe, 18, who will be attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign this fall to major in bioengineering, said she will gain a head start toward earning her degree by completing her internship this August, her third summer with Abbott. Another thing I would say, point two, there really can be a lack of other women in STEM areas.
