Just shut down my shop over town and had a 36 in. If i do its to get my stock down close to where I want it and then I do a final on the wide belt. This unit can easily be constructed by the hobbyist or the professional woodworker. I went with 1/8 x 3/4 by length as required steel bar sandwiched between two sheets of 3/4 MDF for most of the material. General questionif you were to use a hole saw on the discs, say, three holes per disc, and then glue them up, would it affect the performance of the drum? Our sander relies on a perfectly flat top and the paper lifting off of the drum. The drum was shellacd to provide better adhesion of the hook side of the Velcro material, then spirally wrapped with 120 grit paper. We have a wide range of sandpaper grits available for wood from 60 grit to 400 grit and up to 1500 grit by special order for polishing. The drum is made form polycarbonate tubing which runs cooler and eliminates static. What rpm do you run the drum at or is it variable speed also? This design looks like a great starting point. Firstly it lifts paper off the drum creating an air gap. 5/8". With the use of fences and hold downs, the drum works much like a jointer. This sander was built to sand corners or edges to fit square to the sides of another piece of wood. Depend on your needs. The 3rd will probably generate the most controversy, but my design allows me to bite into about 0.040-0.050 inches of wood with each pass without burning the paper. Building a drum sander for yourself is much easier, you can also make it suit your needs, and it costs way less than a new one. I like it. Oh man! I get about 10 of travel, which allows me to throw larger things on the table (such as a completed drawer box, for example) and sand the edges all flush for edge banding or whatever. This is the coolest homemade shop tool that I have ever seen. Im a bit late coming across your fantastic build. Used motors are often available inexpensively on E-bay, Kijiji, classified ads, garage sales, air conditioning repair shops, auctions or friends garages. Im very impressed. It begins with making and gluing together 26 4 disks for the drum. I fear Im stretching a friendship too far by frequently using a neighbors drum sander to thickness the guitar body parts. Hi Matt, Yes, lifting off of the drum. It weighs, by itself, probably 25 lbs. After this is done, get some glue and stick sandpaper unto the drum. It sort of tops off the whole design with a ridiculous overkill clamshell opening system, and a shipping container latch designed for aerospace. Klingspor brand stearate coated paper will sand pine, paint and even nails without damaging the sandpaper, a savings to the user. It rotates on an axis through the use of a round stainless steel shaft and a piece of DOM tubing welded to the top of the frame.

We have even on occasion had customers acquire motors for free. Matt and others I just got into welding and a woodworker at heart. I have the possibility of sketschup and possibly clarification video would be very nice. According to her, you may have to make a few modifications to your sander because of some scrap parts she used, which shes not quite sure where it came from. And a few hors? Im in agreement with Larry above. This workhorse has me droolingI just joined, and am learning to weld, as well. Id like to attempt something like that soon. The table itself is supported in the center by two 12v scissor jacks for motorized lift/lowering.

Our V-drum and Flatmaster Drum sanders sand from the bottom up instead of the top down therefore eliminating sanding through the sawdust that has already been removed. I went with a slab of granite that was broken in half at the local home store and talked the manager into letting it go for $20. Did you just use a big hole saw to cut out all those discs? No clips needed for holding paper. Please send me a copy of your drawings, plans, etc. Stay up to date with videos, events and sales. Overall, you would find this a useful video tutorial which would be of great benefit when you want to build yours. There is another gentleman on youtube that made one based upon Grizzlys design 24(lead screw moves conveyor feed table up and down). 7. A round rod will NOT be precise enough to minimize vibration.

I saw you said you wouldnt mind sending out the plans. Sorry I forgot to give my email address. They can be adjusted and they hold the material onto the granite as it passes under the drum. It takes a LOT of power to thickness sand, so more is better. Also, this could be excessive, but on the other end a vertical belt sander. Let me know if you are still cruising this forum!
